The "Kachaliens" are a group of mysterious beings, humorous figurative symbolic representations of ourselves. They were influenced by American Indian Kachinas and Outer Space Aliens, hence "Kachaliens". Created originally as pastel and mixed media collages (1989 - present), each one has its own identity and name. They are an expansion of the large paintings, drawings and monoprints from the "Space Series" (1981 - present) and even earlier sculptural work in clay.
The "Kachaliens", previously titled "The Discovery of the 1st Space Primitives", are kindled by my interest in the extraterrestrial and communication with other planets. They are inspired by years of study with the American Indian Shaman Rainbow Hawk Linton, and earlier research into African and Pre-Columbian art traditions. They possess ancient wisdom and special powers and have come back to earth from outer space and other planets to share their knowledge.
Each piece is constructed in several steps. First the body is created from a pastel drawing, often collaged in several layers. Next the appendages are added by meticulously tearing arms, legs and head, head dresses and accoutrements from pastel papers. Feathers, ribbons and other mixed media are used to complete each unique collage. Invented to keep company with all the beings of the universe, the "Kachaliens" characterize and exaggerate human attributes, trades, icons and personalities.
